A Graduate Equivalency Diploma (GED) is a certification for people who have not yet completed high school. The GED is considered a high school equivalency exam.

If you’ve only recently dropped out of 11th or 12th grade and the subjects are still fresh in your mind, you may take the GED without a lot of advance preparation. Otherwise, you need to study and prepare yourself with help from the following:

1. Locate a GED Prep course at a school or training facility near you by contacting any public high school or college guidance counselor. For more help, reach out to the GED hotline at 1-800-626-9433.

2. Head to a local or online bookstore or the public library for GED Prep books to study at home.

3. Search your favorite search engine and find online GED study courses. They generally require payment.

About the GED Test

The test covers basic reading and understanding fundamentals as well as math, science and social studies. It covers the following areas:

Writing – Grammar, punctuation, spelling, sentence structure; with multiple-choice questions and a 200-word story to write.

Math – decimals, fractions, percentages and basic math problems; multiple-choice problems where you need to add, subtract, multiply and divide without using a calculator.

Social Studies – Geography using maps and charts, history; with 66 multiple-choice questions.

Science – biology, chemistry, earth and physical sciences; with multiple-choice questions.

Literature and the Arts: Reading and comprehension; with multiple-choice questions.

The test lasts roughly 7 hours and 35 minutes. Ask in your state if you can:

Study Tips for the Driving Written Test

Studying for the written part of the Department of Motor Vehicle Test is an important step toward acquiring your driver’s license. You will need to obtain a free driver’s manual from your local DMV office. You will only need to study the sections that refer to your driver’s license “class.” For instance, if you are going to be taking the test to drive a normal size car, truck or van, you won’t need to study the sections on motorcycles or 18-wheelers. Mark the sections that pertain to you. This will help you feel less overwhelmed.

Next, find a quiet place to study, free from any distractions. Rather than skipping around, study in the order in which the material is presented. Read each section carefully. If there’s something you don’t understand, go back and re-read it again. You do not need to study the entire book in one sitting.

One of the first parts you will need to study is the section on signs, signals, and pavement markings. Some of them may seem quite elementary and very familiar to you. But English is not every driver’s native language. For some people, our street signs may not be familiar at all! For this reason, you can expect to see many of these types of questions on the test.

Continue studying all traffic safety rules and know what to do in case of an accident. And finally, be familiar with different road conditions and how they can affect your driving. Relax before taking your test and good luck!

Effective Methods of Studying for an Exam

Students study for the sake of getting good grades in school but sometimes students are lazy enough not to study so they fail their exams. Others do study but still fail all because they do not practice effective methods of studying for an exam.

Memory is the key to remembering what you have learned in school and from your reviews later on in the day. The thing about the human brain is that it has two ways of remembering things. One is through going over the subject multiple times while the other is understanding the subject so that it gets retained. The latter is much effective.

Taking down notes during classes can also be a good way for you to study. Jot down notes using your own words so that by the time you review them you do not have to reach for your books to decipher them out of their meaning.

Take away all the distracting things surrounding you and your study table. The TV, laptop, even those small little things found on top of your table can distract you from learning so might as well take them out and return them once you are done.

Give yourself time to recuperate after a few hours of intense study. A 15 minute break every two hours is good for the body and the mind. Take this time to grab a snack or have a walk around the neighborhood to refresh your mind.

Plan out your study hours properly to maximize your learning. Schedule them when you have a lot of free time rather than squeeze them in between classes as you tend to forget them once another set of information is input inside your brain during a class.

Talk to yourself when you are studying, despite what others might say or think if they hear you. The more you discuss the subject to yourself, the more you tell your brain to understand what you are saying therefore you retain them inside your memory.

Never study when you feel you are sleepy or your body is too tired to properly focus. Always give yourself time to take care of yourself as it would all go to waste if you end up getting sick on the day you are supposed to take the exam. Keeping your body healthy is just as important as trying to fill it with a ton of information all at once.

Cat 2011 – An Introduction To The Exam

The CAT exam is one of the most coveted MBA exams in India. Every year, over two hundred thousand students sweat it out for entry into the Indian Institutes of Management aka the IIMs. The selection ratio for an IIM is much higher than the Ivy League colleges, thus making the CAT exam one of the toughest management examinations in the world.

The CAT exam mutated to an online avatar in the year 2009. CAT is a computer based test rather than being a computer adaptive test (unlike GMAT). GED Learner’s Stories

Over 39 million adult Americans lack a high school diploma or GED, putting them at a disadvantage in the job market and disqualifying them for higher education. The statistics are clear. American adults without a high school degree or equivalent are unemployed at higher rates and make far less money than those with a high-school level education. The GED is an important step to get adults without a high school diploma back on track. Looking at the individual stories of GED-earners gives important perspective, in addition to seeing the statistics.

Mario Rocha is a GED earner. At 16, he was imprisoned for murder, with a life sentence, a crime he denied. After ten years in jail, California’s appellate court judged that Rocha’s attorney did not represent him adequately. While imprisoned as a juvenile, Rocha earned his GED, as well as fighting for his freedom and discovering writing through InsideOUT, a writing program. At 31, Rocha speaks to new GED earners. He tells GED graduates his own definition of “GED”: Get Everything you Deserve.

Ryan Behnke was thrown out of Springstead High School in Florida, where administrators claimed he could not graduate in time with a GPA below 1.162. After leaving school, Behnke studied on his own for his GED. In six months, he earned the GED, and now hopes to enroll in a trade school to become an automotive mechanic or chef. Behnke remembers struggling in school and falling behind. In school, he never caught up, but the GED gives him a chance to move forward in his life.

Kenneth Neal and Sharon James, of Putnam County, Tennessee, are a different kind of GED success story. They met at Putnam Adult High while studying to earn GEDs. Now, they are engaged to be married. Kenneth dropped out of school in 8th grade to get a job in a shirt factory. When he found himself laid off after 30 years in factory and truck driving jobs, he learned that a high school diploma has become a requirement for most jobs. Sharon dropped out of school in 11th grade to become a wife and mother. After she was divorced, she soon realized that she would eventually need a GED to compete in the job market, as well.

The stories of GED earners are stories of accomplishment, hard work, and hope for the future. They inspire the millions of Americans who need a GED, and they give a face to the need for GED programs that work.

Buying a Graphing Calculator For Math Class? Don’t Forget Standardized Tests!

It’s time to go back to school! If you’re a high school student then you’ll probably be taking a math class this year. And taking a math class usually means you need a calculator. When buying a calculator you’ll want to take a number of factors into consideration including price, functionality, usability, and perhaps your teacher’s requirements. However, you’ll also want to make sure you take into account another important factor, standardized tests.

If you’re a high school student with the intention of going to college you’ll spend these years taking a number of standardized exams. They will include some mix of nationwide exams (PSAT, SAT, AP) and state specific exams. Most of the math and many of the science based standardized exams allow and recommend the use of calculators, especially graphing calculators. Unfortunately, each set of exams is organized by different governing bodies each with their own policies dictating what calculators are approved for use by test takers.

If you’re a freshman you are most likely not yet thinking about college and AP exams. However, if you are in the least bit interested in math and/or science then you will probably end up taking one or more math and science based AP exams. Given the cost of today’s graphing calculators it is certainly wise to take the extra time to at least be aware of the calculator policies for these exams lest you find out later that you will need to buy a new graphing calculator.

Most testing organizations provide at least one web page dedicated to explaining the calculator policies for each standardized exam. Since these organizations have the final say on what is and is not allowable be sure to consult these web pages. Also be aware that although some calculator policies provide a list of acceptable calculator models others provide guidelines of acceptable or non-acceptable functions and/or features. If the latter and you are unclear about whether the graphing calculator you own is acceptable to use on a particular test then remember you can always contact them. A few minutes of your time is well worth it to ensure that you won’t have to add to your worries on a day many students already consider to be stress inducing.

When it comes to the GED test, all test takers have two options: they can opt to take the pencil-and-paper version of the test, or they can choose to take the GED online.

For those who opt to take the pencil-and-paper version of the exam, then they’re in good luck. Browse through any GED study guide, and you’ll find a wealth of formulas, hints and theories on how to guess on those tough questions. Most of them follow this formula:

• “Skip around your GED test until you’ve answered all of the easier questions.”
• “Go back to the harder questions and eliminate wrong answer choices, then pick the one that makes the most sense.”
• “Take a guess on the questions that seem almost impossible to do.”

If you’ve spent any time with GED preparation before, then you know how familiar all of this sounds. In fact, it seems like a perfectly reasonable way to approach your exam, doesn’t it?

But there’s a major dilemma that has never been addressed in a GED study guide before – and it’s about time that it got exposed once and for all.

Because if you’re taking the GED test online, then you know that you can’t move on to the next question until you’ve answered the current one.

So what happens when you’re staring a tough question in the face – and the computer won’t let you move on until you answer it?

A GED Test Dilemma

While the test doesn’t determine the difficulty level of questions based on the previously answered ones, you must answer a question before you can move on to the next one.

And when you’re staring a tough question in the face, it can often seem like an impossible task!

So when you’re in this situation, what are you supposed to do? Should you use up valuable time and try to work your way to the right answer? Or should you take a random guess and hope that you’ve somehow picked the right one?

The answer: none of those things. Instead, use these tips and techniques to tackle those tricky guesstimating dilemmas!

• You already know that you have to answer that question on your GED test online. Instead of getting upset about it, take the opportunity to pull out some of your best guesstimating tricks. Here’s one for you: the longest answer is usually the correct one.
• There will always be one or two answers that are so wrong, they’re almost laughable. Get rid of these first, and you’ve immediately upped your chances of getting the correct answer by 20%-40%.
• Still not sure of the answer? Here’s a guesstimating tip that will stick with you throughout the test: pick the same letter, and stick with it. For example, if you guessed B on one question you didn’t know, do the same on a similarly difficult question. The only time you should abandon this technique is if the B option is one that you can eliminate.
